CHAPTER ELEVEN
Adam stopped by the vet and picked up Walter on the way home that night. The big dog was happy to see him, though he looked pitiful trying to navigate on only three legs.
“He might have trouble figuring out how to do without a front leg,” Dr. Peeples told him. “But he’ll figure it out. Dogs actually get around pretty well on three legs.”
Adam nodded. “Any special instructions?”
Stan Peeples had been Walter’s vet from the time he’d been a fat, shaggy puppy and Adam’s friend since collage. He stroked Walter’s soft head and grinned. “Just try to keep him quiet. No squirrels.”
“You might as well ask for world peace.”
Peeples laughed. “Hey. I heard you found a surprise in one of the homes you’re flipping.”
Adam grimaced. “It was certainly surprising.”
“Yeah, body parts, eh? Grisly.”
“It hasn’t been good for my business. The police tore half the walls in the house apart looking for more parts.”
Peeples shook his head. “I’m sorry for your trouble. Just take care of yourself and this big boy, okay?”
“Why doc, I didn’t know you cared.”
“You kidding me? As often as Walter hurts himself, my business would take a definite hit if something happened to either of you.”
“You’re all heart, Doc.”
Adam and Walter were standing in the small front yard of the office when Dirk drove up. He climbed out of his sexy sports car and strode toward them, looking very serious. “I’ve been trying to call you all afternoon. I was worried.”
Adam frowned, reaching into his pocket to check his phone. “Damn. It’s dead. I wondered why it had been so quiet today. Sorry.”
Dirk walked right up to him and leaned in for a kiss. Adam blinked, shocked by the public display, but he got over it as Dirk’s arms came around him and drew him in close.
Dirk’s kiss was deep, hungry, and a lot more intense than a simple greeting. When he pulled away he dropped his forehead against Adam’s. “I’ve been imagining all sorts of horrible things.”
Adam felt guilty, he hadn’t realized Dirk would even give him a second thought. “I’m really sorry. I’ve been running all day and it just didn’t occur to me you’d be worried.”
Dirk frowned and glanced at Walter. “He okay?”
“As soon as he figures out how to move around on three legs he will be. He hates his cast. He keeps biting at it. Stan said he’ll have to wear a cone if he doesn’t stop.”
Dirk snorted. “How’s he gonna catch squirrels with a cone flapping around his head?”
“That’s the other thing he’s not supposed to do.” Giving up on getting Walter to poop, Adam called him over. “Speaking of, let’s get him inside before he sees one and takes off.”
DS
Inside the office, Adam threw his keys on the table beside the front door and turned to ask Dirk if he wanted a beer. He didn’t get the chance, Dirk wrapped a hand around the back of his neck and pulled him in for a kiss. Adam moaned softly as
